Weekend Musings

Hello lovelies, I'm so sorry I abandoned you this week.  Despite being on my own, I feel like I had a full dance card and somehow lost track of time.  Oh well, another weekend is upon us and I am so looking forward to a few things:

1. Picking him up from the airport.

2.  Road trip to Sun Valley

3.  And on said road trip, daydreaming about...

[How I can create this look in our yard this year]

[how can I work around the fact that coconut cake is not going to make my hips smaller, is there such a thing as healthy coconut cake?]

[what summer frocks can I sew when Mom and I get together later this month for sewing class - start stockpiling inspiration like image above]

[how can Justin and I transform our patio this year - I want a big table - can I build one?]

[also on the list for summer improvements - curb appeal]

[note to self - I need to do my hair this way.  J.crew styling always a hit]

4.  Lastly, maybe treating myself to a movie date: how could I resist the mania that is Hunger Games?

So that is what I have planned, I hope you have a fun weekend ahead of you as well.  I'm hoping to have a fun tutorial for a necklace next week, a diy utensil holder, as well as that cookie recipe I never got to you...

xoxo

Lustin for: Arrow Ring

I adore these beautiful little rings - the combination of the copper with the candy colored enamel is so lovely and the price tag of $24 is a welcome surprise.  This minty one might just need to find it's way to my right hand...yes?

Today

[Poor pup spent most of yesterday in this position, waiting for Justin to come home]

I'm tired and a tad lonely. Not sure why but whenever Jus travels across the ocean I feel his absence a little more than the other 150+ days he travels for work each year.  Both me and Tripps are going to have a long week till the Mr. comes home but we have some fun things planned including fondue 101 with Cheryl, shopping with Mom, a few sessions of hot yoga, and a batch of chocolate chip cookies that will rock your world. (because the whole point of hot yoga is it affords you the justification required to eat cookie dough straight from the bowl as dinner).

But for now, two of my favorite images from last week to start this one off on a pretty note, both remind me of the big blue sky and lush green that should be finding Boise soon...

Spring Cleaning | with style

Over the weekend I tore apart my bedroom: closet, drawers, various piles, etc. and spent most of Sunday morning engaged in some major cleaning, purging, and organizing.  It felt amazing!

Weird fact: I've been meaning to clean the bedroom since it has been a little out of control for awhile now, but on Saturday night I had a terrible dream (no joke) where I came home and Justin had set up an impromptu yard sale and was selling all of my stuff that has been cluttering our house.  Childhood mementos, favorite clothes, half done projects, it was all out on the driveway going home with the highest bidder.  I woke up stressed and nervous - obviously my conscious knew I had been letting things slip a little too much.  It was a great motivator for me to get my butt in gear. (Note: Justin would never just sell my stuff - he is very patient with my slight hoarding tendencies)

Needless to say I can't wait to turn the whole house inside out and clean it from top to bottom.  Daunting task but I'm hoping to get it done while Jus is in Italy next week (yes, Italy and no, I can't go with him).
But for now - here is a peek at some of my favorite cleaning products and accessories...

1.  Alice Supply Co. ($26) is known for their cheerful cleaning accessories - this brush is one of my hands down favorites.
2.  Zwipes ($28 for 36) -besides sounding like something Scooby Doo would say, these bright cheerful colors remind me these multi-purpose towels are just for cleaning
3.  Lemons & Vinegar are my go-to household cleaners.  I try to stay away from anti-bac chemical laden products and these two natural wonders do just the trick on everything from my hardwood floors to the kitchen sink.
4.  Clean Bottle ($12) don't own this but want to add it to the list since I think it is cute and user friendly for making my own cleaners.
5.  My Mom taught me the merits of the cleaning caddy ($6) - the perfect way to move from room to room with all your cleaning tools.
6.  My FAVORITE dish soap out there, Method's Clementine.  Target is where I buy mine - in the big refill bag for ($6).  It's natural, smells divine, and tackles grease like nobodies business.  Plus the pink-orange hue makes me happy.
7.  I'm a big fan of cute containers to corral clutter - these market bins ($10-$24) from the Container Store fit the bill and come in a range of sizes
8.  I'm obsessed with the idea of these fridge bins ($10-$13), we keep a lot of little things (yogurt, fruit, tortillas, cheese, etc). in our fridge and these would be a great way to keep it all organized.

New to me: Lands End Canvas Classifeds

I just discovered the most novel shopping concept - on Lands End website nonetheless.  It's their Classifieds section for their Canvas brand (cooler, hipper, updated classics) and what that means is come Friday you could be getting items like this for as little as $16.  Seriously.

Every Saturday they post a whole new selection of specially priced items for both men and women and every few days they get discounted even further..
So that adorable linen dress shown above started at $35 Saturday and if it is still available on Friday it will be just $16.  Or you could possibly get this shirt, originally $20 for $5 - crazy right?

Of course, the sizes are limited and I'm sure the more popular styles generally sell out by the 75% mark on Friday but it is a fun concept and something worth checking on weekly.  Plus, there are always free shipping promo codes out there (or so it seems) so you could walk away with an incredible bargain.

I'm on a shopping cleanse right now so I won't be taking advantage but I'll keep you posted if I score something from this site in the future.

Oh happy day....

I know that today might find us all a little tired from losing an hour, but come on folks...sunshine until after 8:00 p.m. here in Boise...that is something to celebrate.

And simply, because these two images bring a smile to my face and are inspiring my spring wardrobe...Happy Monday!

Weekend Wishes

I'm going to enjoy every last minute of the next few days - I'm hoping the same for you.

{secretly hoping pancakes find their way to the Sunday breakfast menu}

What I'm loving right now: Spring Green

1.  Adorable Serving Tray ($50), perfect for entertaining al fresco    2.  Punchy prints ($13/yard Rio & Sprinkles) in springs favorite hues, I see them as pillows or a new tablecloth.    3.  Strappy sandals ($20) would look extra sharp with a bright coral pedi.    4.  Pop Denim is all the rage, brighten your wardrobe with this kelly green pair ($125)    5.  Who says gardening ($20) can't be stylish?    6.  Snazz up your first spring soiree with these lovely green hued glasses ($16/4)

Peanut Butter Sheet Cake

As I mentioned on Monday, I spent some of my weekend in the kitchen and was finally able to test out the Peanut Butter Cake I had seen all over Pinterest. The good news - this cake is delicious and decadent. The bad news - you use a few more dishes in the making process than I normally like, which is a small sacrifice for something so satisfying.

Random thought: whenever I think of peanut butter it reminds me of when me and my sister were young...whenever Mom bought a new jar we would bicker over who was going to "carve" their intials in the fresh untouched top of the peanut butter with a butter knife. It’s funny what you remember.

I will preface this recipe by saying, this is a sugary and very rich little number. When I make it in the future I may think about skipping the frosting or at least adding a thinner layer. However, you should make this in its entirety the first go around so you can judge for yourself.

Peanut Butter Sheet Cake
adapted from Nina Jones

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and prepare a standard size cookie sheet by lining it with parchment paper or a healthy spray of cooking oil.

Step 2: Mix the following in a saucepan and bring to a boil:
1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup water
1/2 cup butter - cut into small cubes for easier melting

Step 3: In a medium bowl, mix together the following.
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda

Step 4: Pour the peanut butter, butter mixture into the bowl once it has been removed from the stove (you want it to still be warm) and stir until combined. Note: the batter seems really thick and kind of weird, don't be worried, it will be better after step 5.

Step 5: In a small bowl or liquid measuring cup, mix the following and add to the above mixture, incorporating fully.

2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla

Step 6: Stir well and pour into prepared pan. Bake for 15 minutes at 375 degrees or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Step 7: While the cake is baking it's time to make the frosting. Combine the following in a saucepan, stirring until just boiling.

3/4 cup butter
6 Tbsp buttermilk
1/2 cup peanut butter
Take off stove and add:
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar and 1 Tbsp vanilla

Mix until you have a glossy, smooth frosting.
Tip: sifting powdered sugar is a necessary evil but you can simplify the step by just running a whisk through the sugar before it is added to the liquid. It breaks up any clumps and ensures you have a lump free frosting.

Pour over warm cake, spread with offset spatula for a nice even layer of penaut butter heaven.  You should ensure the cake is still warm so that the frosting spreads evenly and creates a nice glazed finish.

Variations are endless. I sprinkled some chocolate chips on one side before popping in the oven for a taste of the classic PB and Chocolate combo. You could go crazy with the PB theme and add chopped nuts, or sprinkle honey roasted peanuts on the frosted cake for a little crunch. You could also swirl in jam, not sure how that would bake up but could be interesting.

Style Inspiration: the Coveteur

The change of seasons always reinvigorates me when it comes to personal style, the idea of new options sparks my fashion cravings and motivates me to pull myself out of the same-ol-same drudgery of my "uniform".

When the waning days of August hit, all I can dream about it the buttery cords and cozy sweaters I will soon be wearing, and on the flip side now that spring is peeking in on winter, I'm left daydreaming of swingy skirts, bare legs, stacked wedges, and sorbet colors.

Its at these times when I tend to pay a bit more attention to the talented style bloggers out there, they offer a huge dose of inspiration. One of my favorite sites is the Coveteur. Unlike a lot of the "outfit-day" sites, it indulges me in some of my guiltiest pleasures - like being introduced to a revolving list of interesting stylemakers, glimpsing what their closets/spaces are like, and of course, loads of fashion and accessory eye candy displayed like the art that it really is.

I don't consider myself a fashionista by any means but it sure is fun to explore what is out there.

Click on over to the browse section of the Coveteur and see for yourself.

A case of the Mondays

It happens to all of us, the weekend ends before you realized it had even begun and you find yourself back to the daily grind when all you want to be doing is savoring the sweetness of a few days off.

My weekend was full and too quick...dinner with friends two nights in a row, a day with my in-laws that included riding a pretty new horse, a new-to-me fitness class (TRX) that has made my body very sore, skiing the slopes with my 6 year old BFF Duncan under a blue-bird sky, opening all the windows in the house due to 65 degree weather, licking the bowl clean after making peanut butter sheet cake, and welcoming home the weary traveler I call my husband.

A lot to cram in to just a few shorts days...glad the coffee machine was willing to work this morning and that this Monday is coming to a close.

Stay tuned for some new recipes this week and a little update I recently made to the house...

Garden Party

I've always enjoyed being a girl (insert song here), and embracing the lovely feminine details of dressing like a lady.  Which is why I am so excited about all the floral pieces available for the wardrobe this season - all equally covetable and lovely, and the perfect way to welcome the beginning of spring.  Here are just a few of my stand-out favs:

Homemade Soft Pretzels

Yes, I've been gone too long (again) but I'm coming back with what will soon become your favorite new recipe - Homemade Soft Pretzels.

Don't be put off by the yeast (you can conquer that) or the fact you have to boil the dough (it is actually kind of fun).  Just dive in and treat yourself to some carb love and a home that smells like

Homemade Soft Pretzels
adapted from Martha Stewart

Makes 16 full-sized or 32 miniature

2 cups warm water (100°F to 110°F)
1 tablespoon + 2 tablespoons sugar
1 packet active dry yeast
5 to 6 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 tablespoon salt
2 teaspoons canola or other neutral oil
1/4 cup baking soda
1 large egg
Coarse or pretzel salt

Vegetable-oil cooking spray

1. Pour warm water and 1 tablespoon sugar into bowl of electric mixer fitted with a dough hook and stir to combine. Sprinkle with yeast, and let sit 10 minutes; yeast should be foamy.

2. Add 1 cup flour to yeast, and mix on low until combined. Add salt and 4 cups more flour, and mix until combined, about 30 seconds. Beat on medium-low until dough pulls away from sides of bowl.  Add another 1/2 cup flour, and knead on low 1 minute more. If dough is still wet and sticky, add 1/2 cup more flour (this will depend on weather conditions); knead until combined, about 30 seconds. Transfer to a lightly floured board, and knead about ten times, or until smooth.

3. Pour oil into a large bowl; swirl to coat sides. Transfer dough to bowl, turning dough to completely cover all sides. Cover with a kitchen towel, and leave in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until dough has doubled in size.

4. Heat oven to 450°F. Lightly spray two baking sheets with cooking spray or ungreased parchment paper. Set aside. Punch down dough to remove bubbles. Transfer to a lightly floured board. Knead once or twice, divide into 16 pieces (about 2 1/2 ounces each) or 32 if making miniature pretzels, and wrap in plastic.

5. Roll one piece of dough at a time into an 18-inch-long strip. [I find the pretzels much easier to roll on my counter-top.  I just lightly spritz it with cooking oil (genius tip from my mom) and so much cleaner than flour] Twist into pretzel shape; transfer to prepared baking sheet. Cover with a kitchen towel. Continue to form pretzels or for minis you can also just make pretzel bites, minus the shape, or for pretzel rolls you can shape in a traditional round roll shape; eight will fit on each sheet (you may need a third sheet if making miniatures). Let pretzels rest until they rise slightly, about 15 minutes.

6. Meanwhile, fill large, shallow pot with 2 inches of water. Bring to a boil. Add baking soda (and step back, it foams up quickly) and remaining 2 tablespoons sugar (white granulated is fine, or for this step switch to brown sugar, I think it enhances the flavor). Reduce to a simmer; transfer three to four pretzels to water. Poach 1 minute on each side. Use slotted spoon to transfer pretzels to baking sheet. Continue until all pretzels are poached.

7. Beat egg with 1 tablespoon water. Brush pretzels with egg glaze. Sprinkle with salt or live on the wild side and add some pretty little poppy seeds. Bake until golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool on wire rack, or eat warm. Pretzels are best when eaten the same day, but will keep at room temperature, uncovered, for two days. Do not store in covered container or they will become soggy.

I've made these twice in last two weeks and we eat them dipped in mustard, blue cheese dressing, used rolls for homemade ruebens and probably one of the best egg sandwiches ever (pretzel roll, melted sharp cheddar, fried egg, smear of Dijon).

The options are endless and so delicious.  Give 'em a try!

Love List: Day 17

I love quotes.  I do, always have.  I like the sappy romantic ones, the corny motivational ones, all of them, regardless of who said them. I often think about plastering my work space with quotes [maybe one of these days I'll finally do it], I like that the remind me of certain things; to be creative, to value the things that really matter, to be nice, to act like a lady, to remind the ones you love that they are special...the list could go on and on.  But since we are closing a week that is about celebrating love, I think these two are most appropriate:

second quote by Carrie Bradshaw

Love List - catching up

Despite my best intentions I have not been very good with my follow-through for a daily post about something I love.  I'm hoping I can close out the month strong, but to catch us up I've combined eleven of my loves into the board below...

1.  Thoughtful place settings.  Growing up my mom always set a beautiful table, complete with cloth napkins and pretty dishes.  There is just something about sitting down to a beautiful table that makes any meal more memorable.

2.  Large trees.  We are lucky enough to have a large tree right in the center of our back yard and I adore it.  It somehow grounds our whole house, a nod to the history of our little street.

3.  Festive pom-poms.  They just make me smile and want to celebrate.

4.  Tulips signal spring, and what a gorgeous signal they are.

5.  I discovered canning last year and I love it.  Very gratifying to preserve your own food and play with flavor combinations that take your usual pickle or preserve to something extraordinary.

6.  Anthropologie Dishware ranks very high on my love list.  I'm a sucker for their hand painted designs and eclectic collections.

7.  Cozy blankets.  Justin keeps the house at a chilly 64 degrees, my remedy is to wrap myself in well-worn quilts or knitted throws.  These ones from west elm are on my list - gotta love those stripes.

8.  Justin's shirts.  His soft, washed flannels and western shirts are my new favorite lounge wear.

9.  Vegetables - as of late I have really been craving vegetables, and brussel sprouts are a new favorite.  I love mine roasted with a little balsamic and olive oil.

10.  Interesting vignettes.  I love a well styled console of desk, problem is, I'm not that great at composing them myself.  Working on that as we speak.

11.  This little nook in my house, its the home of the only house plant I've ever been able to keep alive and I love the crazy stems of this fern.

Love List: Day 13

Day 4 to Day 12 of the Love List will be documented soon, but for today I just wanted to share something I stumbled across that is perfect as we approach Valentine's Day - the Love Ever After project by Lauren Fleishman.

A random website alerted me to this endeavor, a photo essay about New Yorkers that have been married for more than 50 years, and within moments I was tearing up as I clicked from one touching photograph to another and the quotes that accompanied them.

All love is amazing, but love that stands the test of time always translates into friendships that endured the day-to-day wear and tear of life, the highs and lows that are inevitable. That amazes me even more, spend a few minutes clicking through and be inspired.

Love List: Day 3

Call me captain obvious but today I'm loving the arrival of the weekend, especially since this will be my first one home in over a month.  There is just something so reassuring that despite how irritating a work week you've had (if you are a 9-5 like me) that you can escape for two days and fill your days with happy pursuits.

Over the next few days I plan to revel in....

banana pancakes | cozy relaxation | time with Justin | project brainstorming & sketching | homemade cooking | some slope time with the Mr.
plus some serious cleaning & purging, SuperBowl watching, and maybe a fitness class that involves a feather boa and high heels

Love List: Day 2

Good morning!

Today I am professing my love for Matchbook Magazine.  Every month I so look forward to reading this little gem, it's always full of inspiring images and lovely articles about fabulous folks, and I just adore their monthly "Matchbook Girl" series.  The ladies behind it are equally as fabulous and stylish.

The February issue just went live yesterday afternoon, if you have not already done so, please click on over and treat yourself to a good read.

A month of LOVE

I've always liked February.  The rush of the holidays is officially over, the pressure of resolutions for a new year subsides, and the world seems to pay a little bit more attention to one of my favorite things...love.

So during this special month I've decided to share each day one thing I love, ranging from products, people, books, ideas, etc. Should be fun!

Day one: Sugar Cookies

{photo from here}

What is not to love about the classic sugar cookie - it offers endless possibilities for celebration.  Here is one of my favorite recipes:

Basic Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
    2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1 cup softened butter
    1 1/2 cups white sugar
    1 egg
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk

Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in dry ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk.  You may not need all the buttermilk, just add enough so that the dough is nice and soft but not wet.  Dump dough onto some plastic wrap and shape into a disc, refrigerate for 10-15 minutes until dough it a little firm.

From here you can do a few things.  You can roll it out to approx. 1/4 inch and cut into whatever shape you'd like.  Bake on a parchment lined baking sheet for 8-10 minutes or until slightly golden and then decorate to your liking.

Tip: after you have cut out your cookies, place them back in the fridge (on the baking sheet) for another 10-15 minutes minutes before baking.  This will ensure that your shapes retain their shape when they cook; in other words your dinosaur will still look like a dinosaur and not a ballerina).

Or you can roll rounded teaspoons of dough into balls and place on a parchment lined baking sheet and cook for 8-10 minutes. A fun way to add a little sparkle is to moisten the top of each cookie with the remaining buttermilk (use or fingers) and slightly flatten the top of each cookie. Sprinkle with raw sugar or colored sprinkles.

For either method, let the cookies cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.

Back to it

I am happily back home and promise to post soon about the fab time I had.  Until then, please take a little look at some of the beauties I am obsessed with over at Anthropologie. I mean, come on....

I've seen that table in our Boise store and let me tell you, the photos don't even do it justice, it is STUNNING!  If only I had the room and the money....but rest assured I'll be stalking the sale section for that pillow, I think it will add just the right pop to a new project I'm starting to work on.
